How dangerous is stripping lead paint from antique hardware?
I have been stripping the paint off my old hinges all day. I have been simmering them in baking soda and water in the kitchen with the overhead fan on and windows open and then brushing them with a metal brush outside and then polishing with steal wool. However, I am pretty sure that some of the paint is lead my question is just how dangerous is this. Are the fumes from the boiling bad? The hardware looks amazing and I don't want to give up my project. There are no children, pregnant women, or pets in the house and there will not be for a very long time.
"They" say --the fumes are worse than dust or chips. You need a fan behind you to blow the fumes away from you. The old paint should not be left on the ground. Put it in a jar with a lid and check with you local waste disposal people as to where bring it for proper handling. And yup, really keep it away from the youngsters.
